President Brandon recently came out in favor of surgery for transgender children, telling a panel of social media influencers that he believes the efforts being made by some states to stop children from getting irreversible surgeries is “immoral” and “outrageous.”
The topic came up when Brandon spoke to 25-year-old TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender activist. When Mulvaney opened the interview by telling the president that he was currently on his 221st day of publicly transitioning, Brandon responded, “God love you.”
In the segment, which was aired by the progressive news outlet Now This News, Mulvaney asked Brandon if he believes states should be allowed to regulate sex change operations and other forms of so-called “gender-affirming healthcare,” such as puberty blockers, for children.
Brandon answered: “I don’t think any state or anybody should have the right to do that as a moral question. As a legal question, I just think it’s wrong.”
He added: “I feel very, very strongly that you should have every single solitary right, including use of your gender identity bathrooms, but public.”
Right now, several states already have restrictions on various sex transition procedures on children, while others are currently considering enacting laws that can stop children from compromising their health through major procedures and interventions such as puberty blockers, hormone therapies and dangerous sex change surgeries. Sadly, many of these operations can put children’s future ability to reproduce at risk; some experience lifelong problems from these operations, such as trouble urinating.
Many more problems have been associated with these interventions at the psychological level. Many young people later experience deep regret over getting irreversible sex change operations, with an alarming percentage going on to commit suicide. Experts have explained that gender dysphoria is often a temporary phase for young people, which means dealing with it in a permanent way is not just misguided but also very dangerous.
European nations taking steps to protect children
Thankfully, common sense seems to be prevailing in Europe on the matter. England’s National Health System drafted new guidance last week announcing that stricter oversight was forthcoming on providing children with gender dysphoria “gender-affirming care.” In some cases, the guidance will call for local authorities to be informed when young people have obtained hormone therapy or puberty blockers on the private market. There will also be safeguarding protocols put in place to ensure the well-being and safety of any children who want these treatments. Earlier this year, the world’s biggest transition clinic for minors, Tavistock Clinic, was closed down in the UK following an independent review and multiple complaints from the families of patients.
Meanwhile, Finland and Sweden have recently reversed their own guidelines on gender care. The National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden stated this summer that “the risks of puberty suppressing treatment [with] gender-affirming hormonal treatment currently outweigh the possible benefits.”
Yet in the U.S., the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Population Affairs released a document entitled “Gender Affirming Care and Young People,” while the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration released a document entitled “Gender-Affirming Care Is Trauma-Informed Care.” These official documents list operations such as “top surgery” (altering breasts to be more feminine or masculine) and “bottom surgery” (mutilating genitals and removing reproductive organs) as appropriate treatments for adolescents who claim to be transgender.
It’s disappointing but not surprising that while Brandon thinks young people should be allowed to render themselves sterile and mutilate their genitalia if they so choose, he is not willing to extend the same freedom over individual health choices to those who do not wish to put their lives at risk with dangerous vaccines.
