Image: Campaigns for 2022 midterm elections on track to become MOST EXPENSIVE EVER

(Natural News)
Nonpartisan ad tracker AdImpact and campaign finance data revealed that the 2022 midterm elections could become the most expensive ever with more than $6.4 billion being spent in television, radio and digital ads for the House, Senate, gubernatorial and local races so far.

This already exceeds both the 2018 and 2020 election cycles, as reported by AdImpact, which estimates that overall ad spending will reach $9.7 billion by Election Day in November.

Candidates and outside groups have shelled out nearly $50 million on midterm ads running on Facebook and Google alone over the last 30 days, based on data compiled by the companies. The huge amount of spending on political ads throughout the 2022 election cycle reflects the seriousness of both parties to acquire power in Washington and throughout the country.

The Democratic Party currently controls the House, but only by small margins. The Senate is split 50-50 with Democrats having to depend on Vice President Kamala Harris for the tie-breaking vote.

According to independent newsletter Cook Political Report, Sens. Raphael Warnock (D-Georgia), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada) and Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) are mired in a tight race.

Democrats currently have a nine-seat majority in the House, but as many as 31 seats are up for grabs.

The Warnock and Cortez Masto campaigns have combined to spend over $4 million on broadcast TV ads since September 5, based on recent data from Wesleyan Media Project, a nonpartisan group tracking televised political advertising. The study also showed that Johnson’s team and the National Republican Senatorial Committee have spent about $1.3 million on TV ads over the same period.

Campaigns spend almost $46 million on Google ads

The Senate Leadership Fund, a super political action committee (PAC) aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, has spent $2.72 million since late August on Google ads attacking Democrats running for Senate.

The PAC’s allied nonprofit, One Nation, has spent just over $2.3 million on ads while the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC supporting House Republicans, has spent $1.32 million over the last month on Google ads.

Records have shown that Democrats have also got in with spending millions on Google ads over the last four weeks.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, a campaign arm for Senate Democrats, has spent just over $1 million in Google ads, while the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which works as the campaign arm for House Democrats, has spent nearly an equal amount on Google ads.

Among Senate Democrats, Warnock’s campaign has spent the most on Google ads over the past 30 days, raking more than $1 million in spots on the search platform.

Campaigns and outside groups have spent more than $4 million on Facebook over the same time frame as reported by the social media giant’s data.

Americans for Prosperity Action, a super PAC funded in part by the large conglomerate Koch Industries, has spent over $810,000 on Facebook ads, with some spots supporting Republicans running for state seats. Koch Industries gave a $3 million donation to the super PAC in August, according to a Federal Election Commission filing.

Warnock’s campaign has spent almost $735,000 on Facebook spots this month, with John Fetterman, a Democrat running for Pennsylvania’s Senate seat versus Dr. Mehmet Oz, spending $550,000 over the same period.

Meanwhile, more than two million ads worth almost $1 billion have aired on broadcast television alone in federal and gubernatorial races nationwide between January 2021 and August this year, according to Wesleyan Media Project.

“The stakes are very high this year,” stated Travis Ridout, a co-director of the Wesleyan Media Project. Several supporters of former President Donald Trump are running for positions that would put them in charge of managing elections and certifying vote counts in the 2024 presidential race.
