Brazilian conservative philosopher Olavo de Carvalho passed away at 74 on Jan. 24, 2022 at the John Randolph Medical Center Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
The prominent philosopher was the author of 40 books and was known for his trajectory against communism and marxism in Brazil.
Mr. Carvalho has resided in the United States since 2005. He became known for his books about philosophy, against Marxism and for exposing a power scheme of the Foro de São Paulo, a communist group created by former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Fidel Castro, Cuban dictator.
Olavo de Carvalho conducted an online course from his own house, opened in 2009. His course was taught until this year and added up to more than 500 classes, adding onde per week, on works by philosophers such as Kant, Heidegger, Socrates and Aristotle.
Through live broadcasts, he reproduced his philosophy to his Brazilian students. Some of his teachings have become very well known, such as “knowledge by presence”; “twelve layers of personality”; “method of confession”, among others.
The philosopher’s ideas exerted great influence on Brazil’s conservative president, Jair Bolsonaro. In October 2018, hours after the election results, Bolsonaro appeared in his first speech with three books on the table: The Holy Bible, the Federal Constitution of Brazil and a copy of “Minimum to not be an idiot”, one of the books best sellers of Olavo de Carvalho in Brazil.
After Carvalho’s death, Jair Bolsonaro decreed official mourning throughout the country. The Brazilian president stated that the philosopher was “a giant in the fight for freedom and a beacon for millions of Brazilians”.
The philosopher was a critic of the Brandon administration. In January 2021, in an interview with Brazilian radio, Olavo said that the Brandon government would be a failure.
“There are no Brandon voters. I’ve never seen these voters anywhere. This guy’s events never had more than 50 people. If this elite succeeds in swearing in Brandon, he will not run the country well. Nobody will obey you. He is a complete failure,” Carvalho said.
